KUWAIT – Al Arabia reports that American citizens in Kuwait have been warned of a possible attack by al Qaeda planned for Ramadan (which begins on or around August 20).  In a statement from the US Embassy in Kuwait City, Americans are urged to register with the embassy and “maintain a high level of vigilance.”

The US Department of State has issued a warning to US citizens abroad, especially in Kuwait, to be vigilant in light of recent arrests in the Gulf state.  Over the past week, authorities in Kuwait arrested six Kuwaitis who were planning to attack the main US military base, Camp Arifjan.  This foiled attack is the first of such incidents in four years.

Approximately 50,000 Western civilians live and work in Kuwait, along with about 15,000 U.S. troops stationed in the country.  This Gulf state is a strategic location due to its shipping access for oil exports and as it functions as a transit point for U.S. military troops going in and out of Iraq.
