Battle of Kings Mountain

Tennessee is a state with deep ties to the founders of our country.

While many people may automatically assume that the bulk of descendants of America’s Founding Fathers and Mothers live in the New England area, you may be surprised to know that Tennessee is chock-full of direct descendants of original settlers, founding fathers and mothers, soldiers of the American Revolution, and key people who sacrificed life and fortune to settle and grow our great country.

Many of our forefathers, including my own – Samuel Houston and his son, Peter Houston –  fought for freedom from oppression in the battle with the British on Kings Mountain.

Tonight, one such group, the Tennessee Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, has begun opening ceremonies for their annual state conference held this year in Knoxville.

It is through groups such as the DAR that today’s Americans have the privilege of learning of our founding through programs, scholarships, restoration and maintenance of historic sites and homes. (Click HERE to see list of historic projects, historical collections, etc. )

The DAR has had almost one million members since their founding. These ladies from all walks of life, social status, religions, race, and backgrounds are doing wonderful works of historic preservation, patriotism, and education across this great nation.

You may be surprised to know that YOU may be a descendant of a founding patriot!  Check out the following organizations:

The General Society, Sons of the Revolution

…and many, many more.
